Laboratory Testing

A closer look at the health factors behind your symptoms.

Why labs may help

A clinical review in American Family Physician explains that conditions such as thyroid disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency can resemble or contribute to depressive symptoms. Selected lab tests can help evaluate these possibilities. Lab results support a clinical assessment; they do not diagnose a mental health condition on their own.

Testing we may discuss

  • Annual wellness check: review of health history and preventive laboratory needs, with testing customized to each patient’s symptoms and clinical presentation.
  • Thyroid testing: TSH and additional thyroid tests when indicated.
  • Hormone testing: selected tests when symptoms and history suggest a hormonal concern.
  • Vitamin D: when clinically indicated.
  • Other targeted tests: blood counts, vitamin B12, or metabolic testing when appropriate; medication-specific monitoring may also be needed.

Where and what it costs

Testing may be completed through a laboratory such as Labcorp or Quest, based on your order and insurance network. Confirm the collection location and any preparation instructions before your visit.

Laboratory charges are separate from appointment fees. Insurance coverage and contracted rates depend on your plan. You are responsible for applicable deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and noncovered services. If you do not use insurance, you are responsible for the laboratory’s self-pay charges. Request a cost estimate from the laboratory before testing.

Educational information & testing disclaimer

This page provides general education, not personalized medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. It does not replace a professional evaluation or establish a provider–patient relationship.

Testing is selected based on your symptoms, history, medications, and clinical needs; not every test is appropriate for every patient. Results must be reviewed with your provider alongside your overall health. Normal results do not rule out every condition, and abnormal results do not always indicate illness. Do not change medications or supplements based solely on this page or a lab result.

Laboratory fees are separate from visit fees, and an order does not guarantee insurance coverage. Confirm coverage and estimated costs before testing. Seek prompt care for urgent symptoms; call 911 for a medical emergency.
